European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
