Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
