2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Comes After Mixed Reception
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the need for a more defined vision.
The president expressed that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement follows a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full text from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, he starts with us on next week.
His management and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming him next week. We are all looking forward to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as development progresses.
